Course contents
The course applies ethical theory on actual moral dilemmas which we encounter in today¿s society. Examples of situations where such dilemmas occur, are in relation to professions, animals, climate, war and religions. Focus is placed on how different ethical theories can contribute to identify the dilemmas and the chosen response, and how to evaluate the consequences of these actions. Focus will also be placed on the method that is used when ethical theory is applied.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will:

have thorough knowledge of actual moral dilemmas in today's society, for example in school and health care

have thorough knowledge about application of different ethical theories on these dilemmas

have thorough knowledge about possible correlation between applied ethics and different world views

be able to evaluate and present in an independent manner various solutions to such dilemmas
Examination requirements
It is obligatory to give at least one oral presentation and to give response to the presentation of a fellow student. The presentation is based on a compulsory five-page note, which must be assessed as a pass.
Obligatory attendance at the presentation seminars. More information will be given when the semester starts.
Teaching methods
A combination of lectures and seminars. The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
