Course contents

The course focuses on how scientific theories and research methods can be applied to various forms of research topics within the programme's field of study. It also contains an introduction to academic writing, and how to work with academic resources relevant for the thesis. A main goal of the course is that the student will work out a project proposal for the thesis that both presents and gives arguments for the chosen research topic and the chosen research design. The project proposal should also include relevant discussions of theory of science, method and research ethics.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students will

  • have thorough knowledge of scientific theory and research method within the programme's field of study

  • have thorough knowledge on research ethics, academic writing and the use of academic resources

  • Be able to present academic knowledge in a clear and consistent way

  • Be able to work independently with the master¿s project

  • Be able to present and discuss both their own and others' project proposal

  • Be able to analyse questions related to both research ethics and didactics related to the writing of the masters thesis

  • Be able to present the results of the work with the proposal

Examination requirements

A completed compulsory assignment and work of commentary during the seminars are required. Participation in the seminars are compulsory. More information will be given when semester starts.

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Assessment methods and criteria

A written project proposal with a research question, research design , and project plan of not more than 10 pages (counts 50 %) and an oral examination (counts 50 %). Both parts of the examination must be passed. Graded assessment.
