Course contents

The course will provide an in-depth understanding of contemporary religion in Norway through describing and discussing what characterizes religions and world-views in the country. Among topics treated will be which religions and world-views that exist in Norway today, their distribution, size, teaching traditions and practices. Religion has got increased attention in Norwegian society, as in the rest of the Western world. What are the mutual relations between religion and society, in which way can and ought religion to be manifested in the public sphere, and which value conflicts can be traced in today¿s Norwegian society? The main theoretical approach in the course is sociology of religion, as well as recent history of religion and religious studies, with elements of theology and ethics.

Learning outcomes

On achievement of credit, students will

  • have thorough knowledge about how religion in Norway has been and is shaped by history as well as by the contemporary cultural and social context

  • have thorough knowledge about the diversity of religions and world-views in Norway today

  • be able to analyze, compare and critically consider various religions and world-views and their relation to society

  • be able to convey results from the field of study

  • be able to communicate academic problem formulations in the field of religion and society to specialists as well as to the general public

Examination requirements

Approved report from field work (2500 words). Further information when semester starts.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. A two week long field study is to be carried out in a congregation, faith community or religious/world-view organization.

Expected workload: 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
