Course contents

The course gives an introduction to new theoretical perspectives on studies of gender and religion. The course will discuss how religion may influence the understanding of gender and gender practice within religious communities and in society in general, and how social changes may influence the understanding of gender and gender practice in religious life. The following themes will be emphasized: Is gender a social construction? What perceptions of gender exist within Christian and Islamic theology?

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students shall

Knowledge

  • Have broad knowledge about theoretical perspectives on gender and religion

  • Have broad knowledge about gender perspectives in Christianity and Islam

  • Have broad knowledge about mutual opposition and influence of gender perception in religion and society

Skills

  • Be able to reflect on how the gender perceptions of religions can influence and be influenced by society

  • Be able to evaluate various interpretations of gender and religion in relation to for example equal opportunities and sexual diversity

General competence

  • Be able to apply and communicate central subjects related to gender and religion

Examination requirements

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
