Course contents

The course gives an overview of ethics and of central positions in ethical discussions in a historical perspective as well as faced with current national and global challenges.

Ethics is discussed in relation to three dimensions: Historical-present day, theoretical-applied, religious-philosophical. Relevant topics for discussion are ethics in relation to society, work, environment and global issues.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

Upon completion of the course students shall

  • have an overview of central ethical theories and concepts

  • have acquired knowledge about ethical values and norms, and their role

  • have acquired knowledge about the characteristics of ethical argumentation

Skills:

Upon completion of the course students shall

  • be able to apply ethical argumentation on issues as mentioned above

  • be able to remain critical and reflective when facing current ethical problems on an individual, social, national or global level

General competence

Upon completion of the course students shall

  • be able to discuss ethical problems orally and in writing

  • be able to disseminate how ethical theories can be used on individual and social challenges nationally as well as globally

Examination requirements

For discipline students: Preliminary test must be passed. Further information when semester starts.
For students in the master's programme in the teacher education: Practice must be completed and passed

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
