Course contents

The course gives an introduction to the historical roots of Judaism, Christianity and Humanism, focusing on historical origins and today. The course also gives a description of the development of doctrines and religious practice within Judaism and Christianity, and the ideological development of Humanism in Europe. A central question: How have Judaism, Christianity and Humanism influenced one another in relation to doctrine, ideology and practice? Central periods are Antiquity, The Age of Enlightenment and today.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student shall

Knowledge

  • Have broad knowledge about the history, the doctrines and practice of Christianity

  • Have knowledge about the history, the doctrines and practice of Judaism

  • Have knowledge about the ideology of Humanism

  • Have knowledge about religious criticism

  • Have broad knowledge about mutual conflicts and influence between Christianity, Judaism and Humanism

  • Have knowledge of aesthetics in the three traditions

 

Skills

  • Be able to reflect on how Judaism, Christianity and Humanism has influenced Europe throughout history and today

  • Be able to evaluate various interpretations of history and how these religions and society have influenced each other

General competence

  • Be able to communicate central themes from the history and ideology of Judaism, Christianity and Humanism

  • Be able to apply this knowledge to specific problems

Examination requirements

For discipline students: Preliminary test must be passed. Further information when semester starts.
For students in the master's programme in the teacher education: Practice must be passed.

The workload is estimated to ca. 270 hours.

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
