Course contents

The course provides knowledge about religious texts in Jewish, Christian and Muslim tradition, and the students will be presented with different ways of reading religious texts. The course addresses questions regarding the texts' creation and function and provides knowledge about the contexts in which the texts were created and used. A central question is: What is the relationship between the texts in the three traditions, and what overlapping traditions exist?

Learning outcomes

  • Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • have knowledge of central texts in Judaism, Christianity and Islam,

  • have knowledge of various aspects of the relationship between holy texts in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

  • have knowledge about literary historical questions concerning the texts' creation, genre and function

  • have knowledge about questions related to the canonization of texts in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

  • have knowledge of sacred texts and aesthetics

 

Skills

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • be able to reflect on challenges offered by the interpretation of texts from other times and other cultural contexts

  • have the ability to reflect upon various ways of reading religious texts

  • be able to discuss questions related to the authority of holy texts

General knowledge

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • have an insight into literary, historical and religious interpretations of texts and literature

  • be able to use this knowledge in discussions regarding culture and society

Examination requirements

Preliminary test must be passed. Students in the teacher education: Practice must be completed and passed. Further information when semester starts.

Teaching methods

Lectures. Practice for students in the teacher education.The workload is estimated to 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
