Course contents

This major subject area focuses on development of knowledge, services and professional expertise. Attention is paid to expanding knowledge, skills and attitudes in practice and the relationship between these factors. The course is closely connected to actual development projects in the workplace, and to an individual reflection upon own professional practice. The course is stretching over three semesters.

Central topics:

  • Knowledge creation in practice - practical research and development and understanding of practical knowledge

  • Professional development and learning organisations

  • Understanding of and perspectives on knowledge with regard to values and theory

  • Quality assurance and professionalism in the service sector - an introduction to the current debate related to evidence-based practices (EBP)

  • Critical and ethical reflections on and about practice - taken-for-granted knowledge and tradition-bound practices

  • Development of personal skills and a morally defensible practice

  • Ethical dilemmas and areas of conflict in practice - power, help and violations in psychosocial work with children and adolescents

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will possess:

  • Knowledge and skills to systematise and impart experience-based knowledge in psychosocial work with children, adolescents and families in a scientific reputable manner

  • Knowledge and skills to participate in development projects at their own place of employment

  • An insight into and an understanding of the foundations of the professional field

  • Knowledge about and skills for systematic, critical and ethical reflection in practice

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination includes two parts:

  • Development project undertaken in groups. A report of approximately 30 pages (about 350 words per page). The report will be graded.

  • An individual personal/professional essay of approximately 5-8 pages (about 350 words per page) including a critical/ethical reflection upon a situation experienced at work. The essay will be graded.

The group report counts 30 % and the individual essay counts 70 % of the final grade.One final grade is given.

When this course is not part of the university's ordinary course offering a tuition fee is required. The course runs subject to enrolment numbers.
