Course contents

 

The course will focus on normal psychology for the age range from 0 to 18 years. The central themes covered will be cognitive, emotional and social development. Particular focus will be on the development of infants and young children and the biological basis for normal development. The importance of developmental psychology for the field of child protection will be emphasized throughout the course.

Learning outcomes

 

After course completion the student should have following:

knowledge:

  • understand and be able to describe developmental psychology models, including the main features and variations in the development of children and adolescents, and conditions that impact development

    • have specialized knowledge of the development of infants and young children, be able to describe and understand the importance of developmental psychology for the field of child welfare and explain the most important theoretical views in key areas such as cognitive, emotional and social development

    • have knowledge of the biological basis for normal development in children and young people

 

Skills:

  • be able to apply developmental psychological models of understanding and reflect in nuanced and critical ways on key issues in child welfare work

  • have acquired a knowledge base of developmental psychology through reading current research articles

  • be able to present and discuss what developmental psychology can contribute within the field of child welfare

 

 

Core competencies:

  • be able to communicate the meaning of and discuss key theories and issues within the selected thematic areas

  • be able to exchange views and experiences from a developmental psychology perspective

  • be able to read critically and think independently

Examination requirements

 

Students must have an approved work requirement in order to be able to take the exam. A detailed description of the work requirement will be available on Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Practicum must be passed (with a minimum of 80% attendance)

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work, supervision and self-study.

Assessment methods and criteria

Group assignment from the semester counts for 40%. The length of the semester assignment should not exceed 3500 words (10 pages). Recommended length 3000-3500 words. Group-based grade.

Individual oral exam counts for 60%. Graded A-F.
