Course contents

The teacher’s role, tasks and responsibilities in school. The development of one’s individual teacher identity and relation-competence, and facilitating for learning in subjects for level 5-10.

Knowledge

The student

  • Is familiar with the role of the class teacher and the variation of tasks and responsibilities related to the role

  • Has knowledge about the characteristics of good class teachers and reflects on the significance of communication, cooperation and relation work for class management and class teachers

  • Is familiar with a variety of assessment methods

  • Is familiar with local subject curricula, annual plans, and the school’s and the class’s rules

  • Is familiar with the school’s work and routines connected to the transition between pre-school and school

  • Shows academic and didactic knowledge in the selected subjects

Skills

The student

  • Contributes actively together with follow-students in the planning, implementing and assessing of learning processes related to initial education for the youngest pupils in the main subjects

  • Shows good communicative skills (academic and social) through teaching and the use of voice by narrating, explaining, giving instructions, messages etc. that are adapted to the age group

General competence

The student

  • Shows understanding and respect for variety among the youngest pupils and uses a language that is adapted to the age group

  • Is conscious of his/her role as an adult in the meeting with pupils on various arenas

  • Collaborates with teachers and fellow-students in a constructive way

  • Aims at preserving the basic skills through the focus subjects

The subject in the practice placement

Each semester the student selects one or more specialization subjects. Special learning outcomes related to the practice placement emphasize the characteristics of selected subject(s) (work methods etc.) in the practice period.

Teaching methods

During the practice placement the student is part of a team of fellow-students professionally mentored by a practice supervisor. Practice placement in the 1st year focus on observation as method for reflection and learning. The student shall together with his/her fellow-students work at preparation of teaching and training skills in various teaching situations. This implies work methods like individual preparation, observation, participation in tutorials, planning, implementing and evaluating/assessing teaching in a practice group. The student shall also participate in the school’s other activities.

The practice period is 20 days.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

After the practice period the student gets an individual, written pass/fail assessment. The student must meet the 100 % attendance requirement in the practice placement in order to get a pass. The assessment of the student is based on the learning outcome description. The student must present the assessment report to the practice supervisor before the next practice period.
