Course contents

The course thematizes the importance of the learning environment in pre-school related to the work and interaction between children and personnel. The learning environment includes children’s relations to place, room and materiality. It also includes the relations between children and between children and personnel. The course includes supervision in subject-related development processes in pre-school. The course also includes critical perspectives on traditions and views upon learning in pre-school, in particular those related to specific subject areas. National and international research related to children’s learning in pre-school will be analysed and discussed.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall

  • Be able to relate critically to learning theories and have in-depth knowledge about pre-school related learning traditions

  • Have in-depth knowledge about national and international research on learning perspectives in order to be able to prepare for children’s mathematical experiences

  • Be able to analyse and critically discuss everyday situations in pre-school based on different perspectives on pre-school learning environments

  • Have the ability to apply fundamental skills in supervision on the individual-, group- and organisation level

  • Have a superior understanding of working with subjects in pre-school with a holistic view of learning and the children’s learning environment as the starting point

  • Be able to apply theory and subject related literature in his/her own R & D work

Examination requirements

Participation at seminars where they present their own master’s thesis project and discuss their fellow students’ master’s thesis projects. Further information will be published on Canvas when the semester starts.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, group work and individual work. The students will also carry out one major project work, individually or in groups, focusing on mathematics. The students will communicate research and their own perspectives on learning and learning environment both orally and in writing. The workload is estimated at 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
