In this course working with the understanding of management as pedagogical work will be emphasised. Management affects issues like communication, the culture of an organisation, motivation, change and strategic work. In this course, management is treated as work aimed at giving the organisation direction, and where the manager is a pedagogue creating meaning through motivating the staff. Through pedagogical and didactical approaches central themes from management theory are enlightened, like management of transformation, value-based management and institutional management. The course focuses on the leader as the internal and external front figure, both in the private and in the public sector. The role of the headmaster, the leader of pre-schools, the management of public institutions, as well as strategic management in private enterprises, will be thematised in the course.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student shall

Be able to apply and critically relate to various theoretical approaches to management and organisations

Be able to apply pedagogical approaches to management in both the private and the public sector, including school and pre-school

Have in-depth knowledge about various forms of internal and external communication in an organisation

Be able to analyse and further develop pedagogics as a management discipline with particular emphasis on meaning, motivation and change

Be able to handle central managerial functions on the individual as well as on the organisational level

Be able to reflect upon power, ethics and values in relation to the role of the leader
Examination requirements
Three oral presentations must be completed and approved.
Attendance at all three presentations is mandatory.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars.
The workload is estimated at approximately 400 hours.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Oral individual examination. Graded assessment.
