Course contents

Social changes constantly imply new challenges to pedagogical work both in the private and in the public sector. The changes must be met by a pedagogical expertise which is knowledge-based, analytical, critical, creative, and with the ability to take part in interdisciplinary and virtual professional collaboration. The focus will be placed on the practical part of pedagogical activity in various professional contexts. Particular attention is paid to pedagogical supervision as a subject area and as practice.
In the light of professional theory, the focus will be placed on the characteristics of pedagogical specialist knowledge, on identity and problems related to professional ethics.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall

  • Be able to identify and critically discuss central pedagogical terms and issues within the disciplines professional theory, supervision and ethics

  • Be familiar with different approaches to theory and practice – with corresponding implications for the design of pedagogical work and supervision

  • Be able to identify and map the need for pedagogical development and supervision, as well as articulate implicit ethical problems

  • Be able to identify and describe quality in pedagogical work in various professional contexts

  • Be able to discuss the function of didactics within pedagogical professional knowledge

  • Be able to see new possibilities and connections for the practice of pedagogical expertise in a future job market

  • Be able to present and communicate professional expertise in interdisciplinary professional settings and to the public in general

Examination requirements

The following must be approved:

A group assignment with an oral presentation

An individual reflection paper

Teaching methods

Lectures, student-active seminars.

The workload is estimated at approximately 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

6-8 pages individual scientific paper. Graded assessment.
