Prerequisites

The course is based on PEL 1,2,3 and 4 and 60 ECTS credits from the master discipline.

Course contents

The course gives a thorough introduction to general didactics and provides knowledge about the science of education which is relevant to teachers/leaders. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how the practice of education and training can be analysed and further developed, based on the relations between teacher/leader, content and pupil. This perspective will be applied to contemporary challenges. The course will also focus on the tasks and challenges of the school leader, internally in relation to basic instruction, and externally in relation to cooperating authorities in society. Development of method and analysis competence for the teacher/leader will be emphasised as a part of school development. This will be included in the practice period. Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the students should be able to:

Knowledge

  • apply knowledge about general didactics and curriculum theory related to subject didactical themes in the master's discipline

  • analyze central challenges for teaching- and training practice in a school development perspective

  • discuss the influence of e-learning and media qualification in teaching and training for pupils and teachers/leaders

  • analyze challenges related to leadership in present education system

Skills

  • combine knowledge about the relation between content, teacher/leader and pupil in educational practice

  • communicate important challenges in educational practice in a school development perspective by emphasizing analysis- and methodological knowledge

  • develop further use of e-learning in various learning situations for pupils and in connection with competence development for teachers/leaders

  • adjust the leadership to challenges in today's educational system both within and outside the school and in relation to the school's partners

General competence

  • (further) develop his/her own views upon learning, education, the National Curriculum and reflect on his/her own role in change processes

  • Contribute to school development and changes in the school based on research, learning theories, knowledge about general didactics and practice

  • Analyse, critically assess and recommend changes to the practice period, both regarding practicalities and contents

Examination requirements

One oral presentation of two scientific articles related to school development must be completed and passed.

Approved group work related to the National Curriculum.

One individual written assignment must be assessed as a pass.

For students in programmes with practice: The practice period must be completed and passed.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Assignments and reflection notes individually, in pairs and in groups. A practice period of 3 weeks. Some lectures and some of the literature will be in English.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
