Prerequisites

Students must have successfully completed examinations in courses PED424 and PED425.

Course contents

The course provides knowledge about central special education research and application areas and simultaneously contributes to students¿ becoming able to undertake critical reflection regarding the ideological and professional conditions needed for theoretical development and practice. Subjects include children¿s learning difficulties in connection with basic skills (being able to express oneself orally and in written format, being able to read, do arithmetic, use digital aids) as well as additional difficulties. There is focus on the daycare center and school as providing preventive and remedial services, and these topics will be illuminated from both individual and system-based perspectives. The course also provides students with a familiarity with the rights children with special needs have and how one should proceed in order to protect these rights.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:

 

  • Be familiar with how knowledge is produced among pupils with special needs

  • Be able to reflect critically on the basis and practice of knowledge in various subjects

  • Be familiar with activities and concepts fundamental to the development of children¿s basic mathematical skills

  • Be able to identify and prevent children's unsatisfactory language development

  • Have insight into current secondary problems, such as behavioural difficulties and poor self-image

  • Be able to formulate goals for adapted education and propose educational and organizational measures

  • Be familiar with the legal aspects of special education, procedures for applying for professional help

  • Be familier with how an expert assessment may be completed in relation to high-frequency groups of pupils with special educational needs

  • have knowledge about teaching methods within the special needs education, both on an individual and on an organizational level, that may be applied when working with learning difficulties related to basic skills

Examination requirements

A group work must be completed and passed. 4000 words +/- 10% including references.



  

 

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and groups.

Participation at mandatory seminars and lectures as described in the semester plan.

The workload is estimated at about 400 hours.

Evaluation

Course evaluation is conducted at midterm. A final evaluation is conducted as required.
