Course contents

The course is comprised of three main components: 1) scientific theory 2) quantitative approaches and 3) qualitative approaches.

Students will become familiar with basic concepts associated with the use of quantitative and qualitative research approaches. They will also gain insight into various research methods and analytical strategies, use of sources and the manner in which various methodological perspectives are expressed. Students will gain experience in completing research design, gathering data, data analysis and dissemination of qualitative and quantitative data. Emphasis is placed on relating scientific concepts and research-ethical challenges to methods and analysis.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, student should be able to:

- assess whether quantitative or qualitative methods are most suitable for addressing specific research questions

- demonstrate in-depth knowledge regarding various research traditions and be able to identify and manage basic methodological challenges

- apply relevant concepts and strategies during analysis of qualitative and quantitative data

- argue for the connection between data analysis and scientific-theoretical perspectives

- complete a basic quantitative and qualitative design from idea formation to data gathering, analysis and presentation

- analyse and assess research results and literature

- convey research results in a professional manner

- consider the ethical dilemmas associated with empirical work throughout the entire research process
