Prerequisites

PED128, PED148, PED149 and PED150 or 60 ECTS credits in equivalent pedagogical courses.

Course contents

The course aims at counselling individuals in different ways in public institutions and private firms, in schools, in hospitals and social services, organizations, and institutions.
The course includes planning, implementing and assessing individual counseling, where the students learn to describe and utilize relevant models and methods, discuss and assess ethical dilemmas and challenges, and develop their own professionalism. The students learn to discuss and assess counseling in different contexts related to individual learning processes and change and development processes. The course deals with essential theories, topics and problems, in addition to R&D work within the field. The students will also be trained in presenting subject material, critically discuss subject related problems, and contribute to the development of their own and their fellow students¿ practice.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students are able to

  • plan, carry out and assess individual counselling

  • describe and utilize various models and methods within the field of individual counseling

  • discuss and assess ethical dilemmas and challenges related to individual counseling in various contexts

  • reflect upon their own professionalism and adjust this under supervision

  • discuss the use of counseling in different contexts related to individual learning processes, change and development

  • find, assess and refer to R&D work within the field, and present this orally and in writing, so that it sheds light upon a current issue

Teaching methods

Plenary sessions, group work and assignments. The plenary sessions will vary between lectures, counseling exercises, various kinds of group work and practice seminars.

The work load is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Individual written report (40%). Graded assessment.
