Course contents

The course takes up theoretical, legal and practical approaches to therapeutic work, for example how conditions may be created for promoting inclusion, preventing stigmatization, networking, working to value social roles and use of ecological mapping tools. Self-determination, mastery and motivation are also central elements in this regard. Additionally, the course takes up intercultural facilitation, teaching safe sexuality and trauma-based care. Students will also gain insight into topics about mistreatment and abuse as well as the legal circumstances connected with them. There is also a focus on students¿ acquisition of knowledge about school organization and systems, leisure, child welfare and alternative housing programmes.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:

- display knowledge of therapeutic work in child welfare institutions, daycare centres/schools, leisure and alternative housing programmes

- map, analyse and arrange for secure and developmental environments for children, young people and adult with special needs

- map individual abilities and make arrangements for personal development, self-determination and empowerment-thinking in housing, training, work and leisure

- show familiarity with trauma-based care when encountering children subjected to physical, mental or sexual abuse

- account for how helpers can contribute to establishing and further developing the user¿s social network

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, group work and individual work with advisement.

Participation in teaching practice with advisement on a group basis.
100% compulsory attandance in the teaching practice.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio. During the semester the student writes three assignments. Two are selected and constitute the examination. Each assignment counts 50% towards the final grade. Graded assessment.
