Prerequisites

PED128, PED148, PED149 and PED150, or 60 ECTS credits in ecquivalent pedagogical courses.

Course contents

This course provides students with knowledge regarding central research methods. An introduction to the research process and its stages is given. Students receive experience using qualitative and quantitative research methods through completing group assignments. An introduction to searching for relevant literature in the form of printed and electronic texts is given. The course prepares for work with the bachelor thesis and other academic assignments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • describe various viewpoints on research and science

  • reproduce and apply knowledge regarding central qualitative and quantitative research methods

  • plan various stages of a research process

  • reflect upon ethical aspects of the research process

  • reproduce, analyze and interpret empirical data

  • describe and assess how research reports are created and presented

  • apply knowledge about scientific methods to prepare for work with the bachelor thesis and other academic assignments

Examination requirements

3 assignments related to different research methods (group work). Further information in the semester plan which will be available when the semester starts.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and seminars. In addition to mandatory reading, students are expected to make use of individually chosen literature in connections to lectures and the examination.

The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

6-hour individual written examination. Graded assessment
