Course contents

The course is one part of the one-year undergraduate teacher training programme which consists of pedagogy, didactics in one or two subjects and practice.

The course is subdivided into three main areas:

  • The position of education in society and school

  • Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher

  • Teaching and learning

The position of education in society deals with the mandate and ethic of education and the role of education in a social and cultural perspective.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher focus on youth culture and the diversity of the pupils' abilities. Class management, learning management, communication and good learning environments are also central.

Teaching and learning deal with theoretical and practical perspectives on learning and the use of learning strategies. The course also treats adjustment through implementation of learning strategies and theories about teaching, learning, motivation and mastering.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student shall have acquired

Knowledge

  • Knowledge about the role and legitimation of pedagogy in education and in society

  • Knowledge about the development of schools as organizations and an understanding of the mandate and ethics of education

Skills

  • The ability to plan and conduct teaching that promotes learning alone and in a team

  • The ability to differentiate and adjust teaching in accordance with current legislation

  • The ability to work systematically with basic skills

  • The ability to utilize digital tools in teaching, planning and communication

  • The ability to describe characteristics of competence, assess and document this and give feedback that promotes learning

  • The ability to contribute to the pupil's reflection on his/her own learning and development

  • The ability to reflect on his/her own teaching practice

General competence

  • The ability to build good relations to pupils and create constructive and including environments that promote learning

  • The ability to prepare for local, social and cultural involvement in the teaching

  • The ability to convey and communicate academic issues related to professional practice

  • The ability to reflect on and analyze pedagogical, didactic and ethical questions and issues

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, team-work, individual work, use of digital tools and practical testing. As the course is a part of the advanced professional education it requires the students¿ actual participation in practical assignments that are part of the teaching. Mandatory attendance will then be required.
Students will have six weeks of practice.
Estimated workload is about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written 48 hour home examination.
Graded assestment.
