Course contents

The course focuses on how teachers work in their encounters with individual pupils, pupil groups and teaching material. Major focus is placed on planning, executing and assessing pupil work. The course will contribute to increasing participants' understanding of basic skills as central elements of pupil's learning and the further development of these skills. The significance of teacher actions with respect to leading, stimulating, providing variety, activating and imparting instruction with direction for all pupils in grades 1-7 is emphasized, and is also the main focus with regard to cooperating with teaching practice instruction.

The subject in practice

Teachers and practice teachers prepare tasks related to observation of the teacher role, classroom management and didactic thought.
Practice experiences are summed up in reflection groups on campus during the practice periods.
After the practice period, the students will present practice related work discussing observation, classroom management and planning.

Skills

Students are

  • able to plan and carry out systematic observation and analyze data from the observation

  • able to use subject terminology and give reasons for his or her own didactic choices of theories regarding initial training, learning and teaching

  • able to reflect on and apply research based knowledge in order to conduct good classroom management and develop a secure and including learning environment for the pupils

  • able to collaborate with colleagues on planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching and learning

  • are able to conduct learning processes in a technologically well-equipped learning environment

  • are able to give reasons for, convey and use documents about human rights and children¿s rights when teaching

General competences

Students

  • are able to plan, implement and evaluate teaching for the pupils based on existing framework factors and the current national curriculum

  • are able to communicate with pupils and their parents about the pupils¿ learning and development

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Individual work and practical exercises in seminars. 70 % compulsory attendance requirement.
Working with the development of the pupils¿ digital competence is central.

The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual oral examination. Graded assessment.
