Course contents

The course gives insight into how education and competency are relevant for understanding central educational questions in the modern media technological and globalised world. The conceptual history and relations will be emphasized as a source to understanding how the terms are used today. The importance of, and challenges represented by, media technology in relation to identity and competence development will be focused, and also how it can influence the formation process. There will be an introduction to cultural diversity in relation to formation, education and competence.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • define and compare various ways of approaching the concepts of formation, education and competency

  • explain how the concept of formation arose and how it has developed throughout history

  • explain and show how formation can be related to globalisation, cultural diversity and media technology

  • explain various ways of understanding the competency concept and how it is used today

  • reflect on the significance of social media for the identity development and competency development for children and youth

  • reflect on the significance of public media for how children and young people create their personal identity

  • describe some currently relevant challenges for pedagogical activity in light of media technology and cultural diversity

Examination requirements

The mandatory course work must be completed and passed. (To be specified in the semester plan which will be available when the semester starts).

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, student active group work and individual tasks. Students will be trained at presenting subject material and will throughout the semester carry out oral and written mandatory work. (To be specified in the semester plan when the semester starts).

The workload is estimated ot about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
