Course contents

Through the course students acquire knowledge about group processes and communication theory related to various contexts. There will be an introduction to how groups are created, maintained and dissolved. Theory about communication and interpretation contributes to throw light on what is happening in human interaction. Students will also gain insight into phenomena regarding how people understand themselves and others. Relations and social networks are emphasized as bases for communication and interaction. Group processes and communication in companies will also be illustrated through the themes group counseling, leadership and conflict management. Through active participation in the course, students get to practice and reflect upon communication and group processes in their own group.

Learning outcomes

On successfully completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • Explain communication and group processes with essential theories and models as a starting point

  • Account for relations and relation competence in a professional context

  • Describe how social networks can be applied in work with individuals, groups and organizations

  • Explain the implications of group counseling and how it can be applied in various contexts

  • Discuss possible consequences of different kinds of leadership

  • Describe various kinds of conflicts and discuss possible strategies for conflict management

  • Explain intercultural communication related to groups

  • Reflect upon and analyze communication and group processes with their own participation in a group as a starting point

The mandatory tasks must be completed and passed. (See the semester plan when the semester starts).

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminar groups and group work and individual work. Students will acquire experience with presenting subject material and will as mandatory tasks during the semester give oral presentations and hand in assignments (specified in the semester plan which is available when the semester starts). The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual oral examination. Graded assessment.
