Course contents

The course focuses on the learning students. The main focus is on planning and organisation of learning processes for individual students within great student diversity in which each individual child whose unique personal, social and cultural backgrounds for learning are a part of the school community. The course emphasizes multilingualism as one of the areas teachers must organise as a part of their instruction. The challenges student diversity create for instruction and learning constitute the main area of focus when working jointly with practice teaching instruction.

 

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

Upon course completion, students will have acquired knowledge about the following:

  • The diversity of familial forms including children’s and adolescents’ upbringing, learning and development in various social, linguistic, religious and cultural contexts

  • The child starting school and children’s language

  • Basic interdisciplinary skills as prerequisite for students’ development of learning strategies and metacognitive comprehension

  • Content and reasons for central national and international regulations regarding students and student rights

  • The challenges and opportunities faced by schools with respect to students with special needs

  • Children in mourning and crisis, bullying and child abuse

  • Media influence on children and adolescents including children’s and adolescents’ participation in various social media

  • Students with multicultural backgrounds

  • Gender identity, similarities and differences in boys’ and girls’ upbringing conditions

 

SKILLS

Upon course completion, students will have acquired the following skills:

  • Plan students’ learning based on knowledge about student relationships, communication, interaction and group processes

  • Analyse students’ learning strategies and learning dividend aided by various assessment forms and survey methods which have consequences for further instructional work

  • Give feedback that promotes learning

  • Discuss the didactical challanges regarding education in a multi-cultural society

  • Discuss and take a stand towards popular cultural media expression and relate it to children’s and adolescents’ identity construction

GENERAL COMPETENCY

Upon course compeltion, students will have acquired the following:

  • Understanding for the significance of school’s framework factors with regard to student learning

  • Establish and maintain a dialogue with students and their parents or guardians in a reflected and professional matter with regard to students’ academic, personal and social learning and development

 

Examination requirements

Compulsory course assignments and practice teaching must have been awarded passing marks.

 

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio based on two written works, of which one is chosen for evaluation.
Graded assessment.
