Course contents

Learning is one of the most important terms in the studies of pedagogics and special needs education. This course will provide a basic introduction to pedagogical psychology with a focus on theories about learning that are relevant for a variety of educational arenas. There will be an introduction to behavioristic, cognitive, socio-cognitive and socio-cultural perspectives on learning. The course will also deal with didactical models and perspectives on planning, organising and assessing teaching. These different perspectives provide a basis for the discussion of approaches to central pedagogical themes like motivation, learning strategies and assessment.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall

  • Be able to explain behavioristic, cognitive, socio-cognitive and socio-cultural perspectives on learning

  • Be able to apply various perspectives on learning theories to explain both his/her own and other individual’s learning processes

  • Be able to explain different ways of understanding motivation and how they are applied on different teaching arenas

  • Apply pedagogical theories to reflect upon his/her own learning strategies

  • Apply didactical theories and models to explain central frames for learning and teaching

  • Be able to explain essential considerations and dilemmas related to assessment in various teaching contexts

Examination requirements

The mandatory work tasks must be completed and passed. Further information will be given in the semester plan which will be published on Canvas when the semester starts.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be a combination of lectures, seminar-work, student-active groups and individual work. The students will acquire experience with presenting subject matter and will during the semester carry out oral and written mandatory tasks. The workload is estimated at 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

3-day individual home examination.
