Course contents

  • the development of translation competence through practical exercises done alone and in groups

  • the linguistic, textual and cultural analysis of different text types and genres

  • identification and discussion of specific translation problems relating to cultural aspects, linguistics and text types in addition to terminology

  • translation of various genres and text types, both general and special language texts into English

  • practicing information search techniques in relation to translation

  • use of digital resources and tools in translation tasks

Learning outcomes

After having completed the course the students will,

  • be able to identify and make decisions relating to specific translation problems in concrete situations involving Norwegian to English translation

  • be able to consider, choose and argue for appropriate translation strategies

  • be able to produce adequate and correct translations from Norwegian into English.

  • be able to assess the quality of linguistic material and resources as sources of terminology and translations

  • be able to edit their own and others’ draft texts

Examination requirements

Ten assignments, 7 individual and 3 done in groups must be assessed as a Pass.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be in the form of lectures and student work. Students will work with texts and terminology alone and in groups. They submit drafts and comments on their own and others’ work. They train in the use of digital tools and resources in terminology and translation work. Workload: 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

A two-day home examination. Graded assessment.
