Course contents

The course comprises two parts: Linguistics and Translation Theory (2/3) and Philosophy of Science (1/3).

  • Linguistics and Translation Theory gives an introduction to central methods, models and research questions in the fields of translation theory and contemporary linguistics.

  • Philosophy of Science emphasizes basic concepts within hermeneutics, semiotics, scientific methods and ethical questions.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students should

  •  have gained fundamental insight into linguistic theories and translation science.

  • be able to place these disciplines within a broad scientific context

  • acquire the ability to evaluate translation with respect to relevant choice of translation equivalents in a given communicative situation.

  • acquire a basic understanding of the language of science

  • have an understanding of scientific methods

  • have an understanding of scientific argumentation and scientific explanation

  • students are expected to have a reflected view on competing methods and scientific schools.

Examination requirements

Three obligatory assignments must be assessed as Pass. At least two of the assignments should be group work and be presented in class.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hour written examination. Dictionaries are allowed (between English and the student's native language) at the exam. Graded assessment.
