Course contents

Focus will be on

  • cross-cultural, intercultural and intracultural communication (verbal and non-verbal)

  • semiotics

  • cultural dimensions

  • causes of misunderstandings, techniques for avoiding misunderstandings

  • stereotypes

  • the translator’s/the interpreter’s role in intercultural communication

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, students should be able to

  • understand issues related to the transfer of messages between persons belonging to different language and/or culture communities

  • understand basic notions used in semiotics, communication theory and intercultural studies

  • understand the importance of cultural differences in translation

  • relate theory to written texts, oral communication, non-verbal communication and electronic media

Examination requirements

Two obligatory assignments must be submitted and passed. At least one assignment must be based on group work and presented in class.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be in the form of lectures and student work, independently and in groups. Workload: 135 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
