Course contents

The course focuses on how language and text vary at different times, places and in various social contexts. Using historical, geographical and social perspective, students study major characteristics of oral and written Norwegian. These are compared with the languages of the other Scandinavian countries in addition to their being discussed in relation to the linguistic climate found in Scandinavia. Emphasis is also placed on students becoming able to describe ancient linguistic developments, first and foremost in Norse, which will then be compared with the modern Norwegian linguistic system.
