Prerequisites

Examinations in NO-400/NO-416/NO-417, in NO-209/NO-213 and in NO-405 must be passed before the master's thesis is handed in for assessment.

Course contents

The Master's thesis is to be an independent research-based work, completed under the guidance of an appointed supervisor. The thesis shall be written within the field of Norwegian language or literature or didactics, related to grades 1-7 or 5-10 at school. The thesis may be either individual or part of a collaborative project. The department helps students in formulating problematic approaches for the thesis. Students are assigned a supervisor based on their project description. The scope of the Master's thesis is normally 70-90 pages (Times New Roman, 12 pkt, line spacing 1,5).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will

  • have developed independent and critical attitudes towards basic scientific material and presentation forms

  • be able to utilise scientific theory and method

  • be able to complete a research project under guidance

Examination requirements

Compulsory writing course and presentation seminar for all the students who have not already submitted and got approval of project description and progression plan for the master's thesis. Students must have attended the compulsory supervision (3 tutorial meetings).

Teaching methods

Writing a master's thesis with individual supervision. Compulsory writing course. Compulsory supervision: minimum 3 tutorial meetings. The workload is estimated to about 1200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Master's thesis. The thesis must be written in Standard Norwegian if the examination in NO-400 was written in New Norwegian and in New Norwegian if the examination in NO-400 was written in Standard Norwegian. The length of the master's thesis is normally 70- 90 pages (Times New Roman, 12 pkt, line spacing 1,5) .Graded assessment.
