Course contents

The course is a study of literary theory. The themes may change on a yearly basis, but they will be founded in current research within the field of literary science, and related to ongoing research activities at the faculty. A detailed description of the scientific content will be available when the semester starts.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall

Knowledge

  • have advanced knowledge about a selection of text-oriented, context-oriented and reader-oriented literary theories, and about how they can be used in literary analysis

  • have in-depth knowledge about the history of literary studies and discussions about questions related to scientific theory

Skills

  • be able to work independently with various theories of literary analysis

  • be able to assess and criticise the use of theories and methods in scientific contexts

General competence

  • be able to use knowledge about literary theory and analytical skills when meeting scientific challenges and change processes in society

  • be able to communicate problems, analyses and conclusions related to literary theory

Examination requirements

An oral presentation must be assessed as a Pass.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. The students are actively participating in discussions and analyses. All students must give an oral presentation. In certain cases this may be replaced by a written assessment. The workload is estimated at 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

An eight-hour individual written examination. Graded assessment.
