Course contents

Norwegian language, literature and culture is a two-week summer course that also includes some supplementary work with a written essay. The students shall acquire basic knowledge about and insight into a selection of academic topics within Norwegian language, literature and culture. The material that is taught is related to both the past and the present, but as a whole the course content is directed towards Norway today.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student shall:

  • Have knowledge about a selection of characteristics related to the Norwegian language situation in the past and today

  • Have knowledge about a selection of new and old texts representing various genres

  • Have knowledge about a selection of Norwegian cultural traits, with emphasis on cultural diversity and processes implying cultural change

  • Be able to present and discuss topics within literature, language and culture in Norwegian, both orally and in writing

Examination requirements

Approved oral presentation and aapproved outline for the individual essay.

Teaching methods

A two-week summer course. Lectures, excursions, discussions and groupwork. The students will give an oral presentation and hand in an outline for a written essay to be commented on and completed after the course. The workload is estimated to approximately 135 hours. The language of instruction is Norwegian.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module

1½ year of Norwegian studies. The course is reserved for students from institutions abroad who are studying Norwegian.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual written essay of approximately 2000 words which will be assessed as pass/fail.
