NO-161 Norwegian for International Students, Intermediate level 1 (upon application).
Course contents
This course is for exchange students and other international students on level A2 according to the Common European Framework for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (2011). The students will further develop their grammatical knowledge and skills. Some central topics are the use of adjectives in the definite form, compounds, relative clauses, various types of subordinate clauses and word order in subordinate clauses. There will be exercises in language variation, idioms and logical relations, and some exercises in abstract vocabulary.
Both oral and written activities will be emphasised and the work will include a variety of non-fictional texts. The students will also begin to read authentic texts with an approximately normal degree of difficulty. The vocabulary will be from texts related to housing conditions, family patterns, personal economy, higher education, the labour market, job seeking and CV.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students shall have the ability to understand oral and written presentations of the topics that have been discussed during the course. This includes being able to:

Talk about their own home, family and celebrations, their personal work experience and education, and about their plans for the future

Describe location, explain diagrams, name measures, weight and length

Talk in general about personal economy, various kinds of living arrangements, relationship status

Express positive and negative feelings, insecurity, wishes, conditions

Argue for and against statements
The students shall also:

Be able to write coherent texts about the topics that have been discussed in the course

Have a relatively good grip on Norwegian spelling and on basic Norwegian morphology and syntax

Have a fairly extensive vocabulary
Be able to express themselves in a simple, understandable and fairly idiomatic way
Examination requirements
The mandatory attendance requirement (80%) must be met.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
Assessment methods and criteria
3-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
