Course contents

Norwegian for Upper Primary School Level prepares for teaching Norwegian at level 5-10 with main focus on upper primary level. The course gives an introduction to language and literature, text selection, subject didactics and variation in the work with basic skills, particularly oral communication and further reading and writing education for pupils with Norwegian as first and second language. The course introduces relevant research and scientific thinking within the subject. Emphasis is also placed on the development of the students' own linguistic skills, text competence and ability to teach. The students will be trained in academic writing.

The subject in the practice placement

Through the course the students will acquire a solid academic basis which will enable them to plan, implement and assess teaching Norwegian on level 5-10 in primary school. The students will be given practice related tasks that provide thorough training in didactic reflection. The experiences that the students obtain during the practice placement will be important in their further work with Norwegian as a subject.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the student will

  • Have knowledge about the Norwegian language both as a system and its practical usage

  • Have knowledge about linguistic identity, Norwegian as second language and multilinguistic practice

  • Have knowledge about the Sami language, literature and culture

  • Have knowledge bout the characteristics of oral, written and multimode texts, in nynorsk and bokmål, in a variety of genres and media

  • Be familiar with a selection of literary texts in various genres and media, for children, youth and adults

  • Have thorough knowledge about reading, writing and oral communication, with emphasis on the development of the basic skills

  • Have knowledge about assessment, national tests and teaching aids, with particular focus on level 5-10

  • Have knowledge about relevant R&D work in the subject with particular emphasis on topics related to teaching Norwegian on level 5-10 and a conscious understanding of the implications of scientific thought for Norwegian as a subject

Skills

Upon completion of the course the student will

  • Be able to analyze language and practical usage and explain academic choices that enhances oral and written language development, particularly on the middle level

  • Be able to apply knowledge about literature and language when working with oral, written and multimode texts

  • Be able to plan, implement and assess pupil- and class conversations

  • Be able to assess and apply methods and new technology in the further reading- and writing education and adapt the teaching to pupils with varying backgrounds and skills in Norwegian

  • Prepare teaching that allows pupils to read and write fiction and non-fiction for various purposes and in a variety of genres and media

  • Be able to assess various teaching aids

  • Master written nynorsk and bokmål and be able to teach in both language variants

  • Be able to find, read and understand relevant R&D work about Norwegian as a subject, with particular emphasis on topics related to level 5-10, and use this in their own work

  • Have developed professional digital competence with particular emphasis on competence for teaching Norwegian on level 5-10

General competence

Upon completion of the course the students will

  • Be able to prepare teaching that makes the pupils further develop their basic skills and become text competent language users who are able to participate actively in class and on other social arenas

  • Be able to acquire subject material and didactic teaching methods in Norwegian through aesthetic learning processes

  • Be able to plan, implement and reflect on teaching Norwegian with particular emphasis on topics that are central on level 5-10, and explain how didactic choices are adapted to the pupils and the level

  • Be able to assess their own practice on level 5-10 based on current curricula, professional knowledge and didactical insight

Examination requirements

  • 70% mandatory attendance requirement. The requirement may be increased for certain themes that will be announced when the semester starts.

  • Compulsory requirements that will be announced when the semester starts must be assessed as a pass.

  • Teacher education students: The practice period must be completed and passed.

  • Single course students: A didactical assignment of similar size must be assessed as a pass.

Teaching methods

The course uses a variety of teaching methods in lager and smaller student groups. Emphasis is on student active work methods like group work, oral presentations and written assignments.

The course includes reflection exercises related to reading and producing digital texts to enhance the development of professional digital competence.

A practice period of 20 days is included for students in the teacher education.
Single course students will do a didactical work of corresponding size.

The workload is estimated to about 800 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Two individual 6-hour written examination, one in bokmål and one in nynorsk

Individual oral examination.

All three parts must be passed and each part counts 1/3. Graded assessment.
