Course contents

Norwegian for Primary School Level 2 provides a broad basis for teaching Norwegian at level 1-7 with main focus on the middle level. When working with oral, written and multimode texts of various genres, focus will be placed both on subject content and didactics. Emphasis will be placed on elaborating the reading and writing education for pupils with Norwegian as first and second language. The course presents current research and scientific thinking within the subject. In addition the development of the students' language proficiency, text competence and teaching skills are emphasized. Students will be trained in academic writing.

The subject in the practice placement

Through the course the students will acquire a solid academic basis which will enable them to plan, implement and assess teaching Norwegian on level 1-7 in primary school. The students will be given practice related tasks that provide thorough training in didactic reflection. The experiences that the students obtain during the practice placement will be important in their further work with Norwegian as a subject.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • Have knowledge about the Norwegian language both as a system and its practical usage, with particular emphasis on syntax and text linguistics

  • Have knowledge about language identity, Norwegian as second language and multilinguistic practice

  • Have knowledge about the characteristics of oral, written and multimode texts, in nynorsk and bokmål, in various genres and media

  • Have some knowledge about Sami language, literature and culture

  • Be familiar with an extract of fiction of various genres and media, with emphasis on literature for children and youth on the upper primary level

  • Have a broad knowledge of methodology in reading and writing education for the upper primary level

  • Have knowledge about diagnostic tests and learning aids for the upper primary level

  • Have knowledge about relevant research and development work in Norwegian, with particular emphasis on teaching Norwegian in upper primary school, and a concious understanding of the implications of scientific thought in the subject

Skills

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • Have the ability to use knowledge about language and language development in language stimulating work on the primary level and be able to expound on didactical choices that enhance oral and written language development for all pupils

  • Be able to use knowledge about the characteristics of various texts and genres when working with oral, written and multimode texts in various media

  • Be able to plan, implement and assess pupil- and class conversations at primary level

  • Be able to apply different methods in the further reading and writing education, and adapt the teaching to pupils with various backgrounds and varying skills in Norwegian

  • Be able to recognize signs of reading and writing difficulties and linguistic problems

  • Be able to map and assess reading and writing abilities at the upper primary level, and give feed-back that promotes learning to all the pupils

  • Be able to plan, implement and assess work with fiction and literary texts from different perspectives and for various purposes at the upper primary level

  • Be able to assess various Norwegian teaching aids, particularly for the primary level

  • Master nynorsk and bokmål and be able to teach both language variants

  • Be able to orient themselves in, read and understand relevant research and development work on the subject, with particular emphasis on topics related to teaching Norwegian on primary level, and use these sources in their own teaching

  • Have professional digital competence with particular focus on competence relevant for teaching Norwegian on primary level

General competence

Upon completion of the course the student shall

  • Be able to facilitate teaching for pupils on primary level that develops and improves basic language proficiency, and which makes the pupils text competent language users with the ability to participate actively in the classroom and other social arenas

  • Be able to acquire scientific knowledge and didactical work methods in Norwegian through aesthetic learning processes

  • Be able to plan and implement teaching in central themes on the primary level and justify adapted didactic choices

  • Have the ability to assess his/her own teaching on the lower level based on current curricula, academic knowledge and didactical insight

Examination requirements

  • 70% mandatory attendance requirement. The requirement may be increased for certain themes that will be announced when the semester starts.

  • Compulsory requirements that will be announced when the semester starts must be assessed as a pass.

  • Teacher education students: The practice period must be completed and passed.

  • Single course students: A didactical assignment of similar size must be assessed as a pass.

Teaching methods

The course uses a variety of teaching methods in lager and smaller student groups. Emphasize is on student active work methods like group work, oral presentations and written assignments.

The course includes reflection exercises related to reading and producing digital texts to enhance the development of professional digital competence.

A practice period of 15 days is included for students in the teacher education.
Single course students will do a didactical work of corresponding size.

The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Two individual written examination, one in bokmål and one in nynorsk. Each counts 50%.
