Course contents

Norwegian for Lower Primary Level 1 provides an initial basis for teaching Norwegian on level 1-7 with main focus on the lower levels. Language courses and literature, didactic problems and work related to the basic skills are central, in particular the initial reading- and writing education. The course presents current research and scientific thinking within the subject. In addition the development of the students¿ language proficiency, text competence and teaching skills are emphasized. Students will be trained in academic writing.

The subject in the practice placement

Through the course the students will acquire a solid academic basis which will enable them to plan, implement and assess teaching Norwegian on level 1-4 in lower primary school. The observation practice in pre-schools will provide an insight that is crucial for initial education in Norwegian. The students will be given practice related tasks that provide thorough training in didactic reflection. The experiences that the students obtain during the practice placement will be important in their further work with Norwegian as a subject.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • Have knowledge about the Norwegian language both as a system and its practical usage, with special emphasize on phonology and morphology

  • Have thorough knowledge about children's language development

  • Be familiar with an extract of literary texts of various genres and media, with emphasize on literature for children on the lower levels

  • Have a broad knowledge about methods in initial reading- and writing education

  • Have knowledge about diagnostic tests and learning aids for the lower levels

  • Have knowledge about relevant scientific and development work in Norwegian, with particular emphasize on themes related to teaching Norwegian in lower primary school

Skills

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • Have the ability to use knowledge about language and language development in language stimulating work on the lower levels and be able to expound on didactical choices that enhance oral and written language development for all pupils

  • Be able to plan, implement and assess pupil- and class conversations on the lower levels

  • Be able to use various methods in the initial reading- and writing education and adapt the teaching to pupils with different backgrounds and varying skills in the Norwegian language

  • Be able to map and assess reading and writing skills on the lower levels, and give all pupils response that enhances learning

  • Be able to plan, implement and assess work with literary texts from various perspectives and for various purposes on the lower levels

  • Be able to assess various teaching aids, particularly for the lower levels in primary school

  • Have developed a professional digital competence with special focus on relevant competence for teaching Norwegian on the lower levels

  • Have further developed his/her own language proficiency, text competence and teaching skills

  • Be able to find, read and understand relevant research and development work within the subject with particular emphasize on themes related to teaching Norwegian on the lower levels

General competence

Upon completion of the course the student shall

  • Be able to facilitate teaching for pupils on level 1-4 that promotes development and improvement of basic language proficiency, and which makes the pupils text competent language users with the ability to participate actively in the classroom and on other social arenas

  • Be able to acquire scientific knowledge and didactical work methods in Norwegian through aesthetic learning processes

  • Be able to plan and implement teaching in central themes on the lower levels and justify adapted didactic choices

  • Have the ability to assess his/her own teaching on the lower levels based on current learning plans, academic knowledge and didactical insight

Examination requirements

  • 70% mandatory attendance requirement. The requirement may be increased for certain themes that will be announced when the semester starts.

  • Compulsory requirements to be announced when the semester starts must be assessed as a pass.

  • Studente in the teacher education: The practice period must be completed and passed.

  • Single course students: A didactical assignment of similar size must be assessed as a pass.

Teaching methods

The course presents a variety of teaching methods in lager and smaller student groups. Emphasize is on student active work methods like group work, oral presentations and written assignments.

The course includes reflection exercises related to reading and producing digital texts to enhance the development of professional digital competence.

A practice period of 20 days is included for students in the teacher education.
Single course students will do a didactical work of corresponding size.

The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
