Course contents

The course is one part of the one-year programme in educational theory and practice which consists of didactics in one or two subjects, pedagogy and practice.

The course in Norwegian didactics is subdivided into three main areas:

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher

Teaching and learning

The school's position in society and the subject's place in education deals with the distinctiveness of the subject of Norwegian, development and its legitimization as a school subject, curriculum and other official documents. Problems related to the lower secondary school level will also be emphasized.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher focuses on the role of the Norwegian teacher, and knowledge about youth culture and the diversity of the pupils' background and abilities. The course also deals with youth culture and the diversity of the pupils abilities. Pedagogical skills in classroom management, communication and building good learning environments will be focused.

Teaching and learning treats didactic theories, teaching methods, learning strategies and knowledge of teaching aids. Based on the students' knowledge of Norwegian and insight into the subject's didactics, the course will furthermore focus on didactic reflection and practical rehearsal in the form of planning, implementation, adaptation and assessment of the teaching of Norwegian in lower secondary school.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the students shall have obtained

  • knowledge of the National Curriculum for the Norwegian at primary and lower secondary level

  • knowledge of the relation between Norwegian as scientific subject, a study- and school subject, and also between subject, subject didactics and practice

  • knowledge of a broad variety of learning strategies and teaching methods as well as teaching aids and materials adapted to Norwegian as a school subject

  • extensive knowledge of reading and writing theories, and relevant theories within the field of teaching reading and writing to pupils who have already acquired basic reading skills.

  • extensive knowledge of reading and writing theories related to teaching advanced reading

extensive knowledge of theoretical literary and didactical concepts and perspectives that are relevant for teachers working with literature from various times, genres and media, and which is aimed at youth in particular

 

Skills

Upon completion of the course the students are to be able to

  • reflect upon and discuss aims, content, methods, forms of assessment, curricula and teaching aids related to teaching Norwegian at the lower secondary level

  • orientate themselves in subject literature, read critically and with professional assurance develop their own role understanding and practice

  • plan and implement teaching based on the Norwegian subject curriculum for primary and lower secondary school, and which is adapted to the diversity of the pupils

  • reflect upon, assess and justify their own didactical practice

  • be able to apply various forms of assessing Norwegian with emphasis on formative assessment

 

General competence

Upon completion of the course the students are to be able to perform as professionally competent and didactically reflected Norwegian teachers in various teaching situations

Examination requirements

The following must be completed and passed:

  • Practice

  • Mandatory participation requirements (80 %)

  • Mandatory participation at the initial course

  • Students who have chosen Norwegian as subject No. 1: Passed written assignment

  • Students who have chosen Norwegian as subject No. 2: Passed interdisciplinary assignment with pedagogy and didactics

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by a variety of work methods in the form of lectures, seminars, practice and supervision, conversation, reflection, presentations, preparation of teaching and other practical exercises. Practical testing of various forms of activities relating to Norwegian and the role of the teacher will be central.
In addition to teaching students are expected to work both individually and in groups. A significant part of the students' learning and maturing will develop through these individual efforts.
As the course is part of the one-year programme in educational theory and practice, it requires students' actual participation in practical assignments that are part of the teaching. Mandatory attendance will then be required.
Students taking Norwegian as subject 2 will submit an interdisciplinary assignment with pedagogy and didactics.
Students taking Norwegian as subject 1 will submit one written assignment.
The students will have six weeks of practice, primarily in lower secondary school.


The workload is estimated to about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual oral examination. Graded assessment.
