Course contents

The course provides a basic introduction to Nordic, especially Norwegian, literature in a historical perspective. This perspective shows how the literary work is both formed by its time, and also contributes to create history. Students will work on literature from various epochs and they will learn about important writings and authorships from the Norse era till today. The course will provide students with practice in analyzing and assessing texts from different epochs and in reflecting upon their own historical and professional position.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should have knowledge of Nordic, especially Norwegian, literary history, and be able to apply this knowledge to literary analysis. The should also have an overview of literary historical periods and aesthetic movements in addition to having knowledge about cultural contexts and literary conventions. They should also have some knowledge about the history of literature as a subject and practice in reflecting upon their own historical and professional stance.

Examination requirements

Individual written assignememt must be assessed as a Pass.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and group work. The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual 6-hour written examination. Graded assessment.

Requirements regarding language must be fulfilled in accordance with study programme description for Nordic Language and Literature, Bachelor programme and Nordic Languages and Literature, One-Year Study Programme: Of the two written examinations during autumn semester (in NO-143 and NO-145), one is to be written in Standard Norwegian and one in New Norwegian, and of the two written examinations during spring semester (in NO-144 and NO-146), one is to be written in Standard Norwegian and one in New Norwegian. These requirements apply also for teacherstudents.
