Course contents

The course provides a basic introduction to analyzing literature, that is to say describe and interpret literary texts in an academic and reflective way. Students work on a broad selection of Nordic, especially Norwegian, literature: poetry, essays and work where thext and images interact. The course provides knowledge of genre theory, rhetoric and interpretation, and trains the students to use these skills when working with literature.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should
- have acquired methods for textual analysis based on a wide selection of Nordic, especially Norwegian, literature.
- also have developed an understanding of the language’s aesthetic qualities and gained insight into various literary forms of expression (genres, interplay between artistic forms).
- have knowledge about interpretive theory and acquire the necessary skills to write analytically and interpretively.

Examination requirements

For teacherstudents: Practice must be assessed as 'Passed'.

For other students: Passed an individual written assignment.

The written assignment is not compulsory for teacherstudents, but those who wish may hand in the assignment and get feedback for it like the other students.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and group work. Practice is included for teacherstudents. The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual at-home examination (with a one-week hand-in deadline). Differentiated marks.

Any requirements regarding linguistic form must be fulfilled, see course descriptions for Nordic Language and Literature, Bachelor Programme and Nordic Language and Literature, One-Year Study Programme: Of the two written examinations in autumn semester (in NO-143 and NO-145), one is to be written in Standard Norwegian and one in New Norwegian, and of the two written examinations in spring semester (in NO-144 and NO-146), one is to be written in Standard Norwegian and one in New Norwegian. These requirements apply also for teacherstudents.
