NO-141 or NO-149 or an equivalent course.

Course contents

The course provides students already having fundamental knowledge about working with linguistic minorities with a broader level of competency in the subject. The course expands upon students' previous knowledge of language, text and culture in a comparative perspective through introducing topics such as alphabetization, different writing systems, texts directed at older pupils as well as the relationship between culture and identity.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, students will have knowledge about:

  • charting pupils with minority language on their linguistic competency in Norwegian

  • alphabetization

  • different writing systems

  • native language significance for a pupil learning a second language

  • relevant plans and legislation the regulate working with linguistic minorities

  • literature and media texts with multicultural themes directed at young people and adults

  • teaching aids developed for working with linguistic minorities

  • relationship between identity and culture, and ethnicity and racism

Skills

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • assess and use charting tools

  • assess teaching aids developed for pupils of linguistic majority from a second language perspective

  • facilitate reading for learning in a language other than native language

  • facilitate discussions about identity and culture with literary texts and media texts as a starting point

  • organize stimulating cultural meetings in school and society

Examination requirements

Two assignments announced at the semester start.

Teaching methods

The course is divided into five sessions and is comprised of lectures, discussions and some group work. The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
