Course contents

The course provides an aquirement to linguistic and cultural topics, thereby helping the students to get a contrastive perspective on language and culture. They are supposed to learn to organize quality instruction for pupils belonging to linguistic minorities, and for groups consisting of pupils from both linguistic majorities and minorities.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired:

  • knowledge about the Norwegian language situation

  • knowledge about similarities and differences between languages (linguistic typology)

  • knowledge about Norwegian grammar from a second language perspective

  • knowledge about what it means to be multilingual

  • knowledge about characteristics in texts written by pupils having a native language other than Norwegian

  • knowledge about training in reading, writing and oral activities for pupils with a native language other than Norwegian

  • knowledge about interpretation of literary texts in a multicultural class-room

  • knowledge about multicultural children's and young people's literature in Norwegian

  • insight into challenges related to multicultural society and multicultural school

  • insight into what it means to belong to linguistic and cultural minorities

  • knowledge about educational plans in beginner-level Norwegian for linguistic minorities

Skills

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • guide students with a native language other than Norwegian in reading and writing texts of various styles

  • analyze and assess texts written by pupils with a native language other than Norwegian

  • facilitate oral use of Norwegian as a second language

  • facilitate working on literature in a multicultural class-room

  • facilitate good cooperation between school and home

General skills

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • arrange stimulating cultural meetings in multicultural school settings

Examination requirements

Two assignments announced at the semester start.

Teaching methods

The course is divided into five sessions, and is comprised of lectures, discussions and some group work. The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Individual written 6-hours examination. Differentiated grades.
