Course contents

Focus will be on

  • the structure of the Norwegian language

  • grammar and spelling

  • text analysis

  • translation of various text types and genres from English into Norwegian

  • discussion of translation decisions and strategies

  • information retrieval

  • terminology

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, students should

  • have acquired basic insight into the structures of the Norwegian language

  • be able to express themselves functionally and correctly in both variants of Norwegian

  • be able to discuss the contributions of different language structures to meaning making

  • be able to master the rules for correct spelling and grammar

  • be abel to identify and compare different genres and text type conventions

  • explain basic aspects of context and function

Examination requirements

Five compulsory translations in each semester must be approved. Three of the 10 assignments must be written in the Norwegian language variant nynorsk/alternatively bokmål.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be in the form of lectures and student work, including group work. Work load: 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Four-hour written examination, counts 50%. 

Portfolio with 3 of the 10 translations with reflective texts of 300-600 words. Counts 50%. Both parts of the examination must be assessed as a pass in order to achieve a pass in the course as a whole. Graded assessment.
