Course contents

The course aims to provide the student with an understanding of tendencies and the current subjects of research within the field of popular music research, and also knowledge of central concepts and theoretical research questions within popular musicology.

The course is linked to ongoing internationally informed projects in the field of popular music research led by the academic staff at the Department of Popular Music/Popular Music Research Unit.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will

  • have a comprehensive understanding of relevant topics and theoretical research questions central to popular musicology

  • be able to make use of differing theoretical and methodological approaches with a high degree of critical reflection

  • be able to analyse and relate critically to different information sources, and to apply them in order to structure and formulate academic reasoning

  • be able to articulate hypotheses related to research ideas

  • have acquired skills in academic writing and oral articulation related to the field of research

 

Examination requirements

Mandatory attendance is a premise. All work assignments must be passed before the final examination can take place. An overview of the workload will be presented on Canvas at the start of the semester.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written individual examination to be delivered within 14 days.

Assessed with the grades A-F.
