Course contents

Ensemble (5 credits)

Main instrument (20 credits)

The course includes:

• Various communication techniques

• Development of individuality

• Introduction to various methods of song writing

• Pitching songs to music publishing/media

• Entrepreneurship and career planning

• Improvisation

• Development of instrumental/vocal skills

• Development of style understanding and repertoire

• Development of a personal expression

• Knowledge of relevant methodology and development of their own working practices

• The harmonic, melodic and rhythmic foundation for different types of improvisational music

• Transcribing

• Accompaniment and arranging for separate instrument

• Rehearse, reproducing recorded music and aural playing

• Recording practices, technological and arrangement aspects of recording associated with the instrument

• Interaction in different formats

• Entrepreneurship with mediation

Learning outcomes

The student will:

• adapt to the professional music life different work situations

• have broad knowledge of different styles in various songwriter, artist and music traditions in relation to their main instrument

• have acquired a separate personal expression as a songwriter and artist

• be able to use their improvisational skills of styles in various musical traditions and in different interaction situations

• be able to plan, adapt and implement various projects to strengthen own career in the professional music scene

Examination requirements

• Passed concerts during the academic year (information presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester).

• Passed practical test in entrepreneurship.

• Approved participation of at least 3 concerts / artistic projects during the academic year.

• A skill test on the main instrument. To be held at the end of the autumn semester.

Teaching methods

The teaching will include individual lessons and group instruction. During the academic year, students participate in various mandatory projects and seminars. Main instrument instruction may periodically organized flexibly to allow for different projects. Attendance is obligatory for teaching.

Expected scope of work for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

• Submitted recorded material (20 minutes)

• A concert lasting approximately 60 minutes.

• Final assessment is based on an overall impression of the candidate's recorded material and concert.
