Course contents

The course consists of main instrument teaching, ensemble, and interpretation. In the course, emphasis is placed on further developing skills on the instrument and in collaborating with other students. The course focus on genre and repertoire knowledge. The student will gain knowledge of relevant methodology, and they will develop their work and exercise practices.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • have acquired creative methods and skills in their main instrument

  • be able to apply different methods for effective and targeted rehearsal of music

  • have a broad and reflective basis for recognizing and understanding different forms of musical genres in relation to their main instrument

  • be able to prepare and carry out a concert program

Examination requirements

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • an approved ensemble concert

  • approved participation in at least one interpretation

  • approved participation in 1–3 projects and / or seminars

  • a proficiency test on the main instrument lasting 15-20 minutes

Teaching methods

The course contains main instrument teaching, ensemble, seminars and projects. Creative work is central both independently and in groups, including the development of a personal artistic expression.
Each student is given individual tuition on their main instrument. If appropriate, the teaching can occasionally be organized in groups. Ensemble is conducted in regular groups and in various projects. During the course, the student participates in interpretation and in various compulsory projects and / or seminars.

For the students at bachelor in popular music - specialization in performance: The ensemble teaching is conducted in regular ensemble bands. Projects are presented at the start of the semester. At the end of the semester, the ensemble band conducts a studio session to record some of the material.

For the students at bachelor in electronic music: In ensemble the student can choose different areas such as DJ, co-writing, studio band, ensemble or sampling and Live-Remix ensemble. Eligibility in ensemble can vary on the basis of the number of students.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Performing Music – Popular Music:

A concert carried out as a group exam consisting of a minimum of 2 students. The duration of the concert is set to 30 to a maximum of 45 minutes. Students are assessed individually. Repertoire and participation are decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

Electronic Music:

A performance of 15-25 minutes in the form of a concert or DJ set. The performance can be performed in groups but is assessed individually. Repertoire and choice of performance form is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.
