Course contents

The course emphasizes developing skills on the main instrument, in ensemble and on the student's instrument II. The connection between individual work and ensemble is central, and the student is challenged in interpretation classes and as musical director, creative works, audio equipment knowledge and in music study subjects. Emphasis focus on understanding musical styles and genres, both individually and in ensemble. Performing knowledge–in the form of performance mastery, collaboration, and instrument knowledge–is taught in both ensemble and individual performance.

Further development of skills in the student's main area is emphasized, and the student is encouraged to work with different styles within the popular music genres. Creative work through independent working methods and effective study of music, provides the student knowledge of the individual performance in several fields. In addition, the student aims to develop adequate working and exercise practices.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to practice and communicate music within the field of popular music

  • have knowledge of creative and independent working methods within their instrument

  • master key techniques on their main instrument

  • know the key techniques of an instrument II

  • master methods for effective study of music

  • be able to adapt to different musical arenas within the most common genres within their main field such as the concert scene and sound studio

  • know the different roles of central instruments in different genres of music

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • two approved ensemble concerts / submission projects during the course

  • approved participation of at least 1 interpretation per semester

  • approved participation in 1-3 projects and /or seminars

  • an approved practical test with 1-3 assignments on instrument II

Teaching methods

Each student is given individual instruction on their main instrument. Teaching may be conducted in groups, ensemble and in various projects. During the course, the student participates in interpretation, as well as 1-3 compulsory projects and seminars. The student is also provided teaching on an optional instrument II individually or, if appropriate, in groups.

Interpretive teaching is organized with students as participants and conducted as a concert with a following feedback sequence.

Individual and group supervision is provided in the performing activities and composition. For the students in the program in electronic music, individual and group supervision is given in programming and studio sessions.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These sections are presented in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

  • For students in the bachelor's program in performing music – popular music: A concert of 15 minutes. May be carried out in groups but assessed individually. The repertoire is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

  • For the students in the bachelor's program in electronic music: Individual portfolio submission with 20 minutes of recorded music performed in the form of a concert, presentation, or DJ set. Repertoire is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

  • For all students: A proficiency test on the main instrument lasting 15-20 minutes.
