Course contents

  • Popular music harmony treatment

  • Functional analysis

  • Arranging techniques

  • Instrumentation

  • Introduction to composition techniques and form

  • Analysis of existing and own compositions

  • Introduction to a secondary instrument

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will:

  • master basic composing and arranging techniques

  • integrate various form principles

  • be familiar with the application of different instruments within popular music tradition

  • be familiar with different notation methods

  • master harmonic analysis

  • be able to apply a supporting instrument in relation to work with composing and arranging, in rehearsals and in accompaniment situation.

Examination requirements

Passed compulsory assignments. Information on how many assignments will be made available in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Teaching takes place in groups and individual counselling. Attendance is obligatory for teaching.

Expected scope of work for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual project with a submission of the scores and audio product.
