Course contents

The course focus on the historic knowledge of electronic music and how the role of selected styles, people and environments has influenced the development of electronic music. The course will train the student in listening, stylistic knowledge, and verbalization within subject areas such as groove and sound / texture, as well as link them to the historical and socio-cultural situation connected to the examples.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to indicate the place and cultural context for an electronic listening example

  • be able to describe an electronic musical process after listening

  • know the role of important people and environments as well as important historic lines of development in electronic music

  • be able to reflect critically on the interplay between social trends, aesthetics and technology

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 1-3 approved assignments

Teaching methods

The teaching is provided as lectures, listening seminars, groups, and supervision in connection with group assignments.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected scope of work is 27 hours per. credits.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission consisting of:

  • a practical sound production assignment of 5-10 minutes with historical references to the syllabus. The sound production may consist of several recordings.

  • a written reflection that describes the work process and the historical references
