Course contents

This course is organised to facilitate an understanding of central academic concepts and practices of leadership and organisational management in the music industry. The course will provide the students with central theoretical frameworks and current cases in order to fully understand the dynamics and structures of the music industry.

The course will particularly focus on issues following digital change. This involves focusing on business models and revenue streams as well as entrepreneurship and innovation. The course provides an overview of the foundations of the music business and offers insight in how the different stakeholders and sectors have been impacted by digital change. This includes new digital formats, such as music streaming.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student should: 

  • have an overview of relevant theories and models of music business and management

  • have acquired knowledge about the management of change and about how to cope with scalable businesses in an environment of transition

  • understand intellectual property rights within an arts management/cultural industry context

  • understand the music industry origins, development and the connection between its different revenue streams

Examination requirements

The student will submit a written term paper. The term papers must be passed before taking the exam. More information about compulsory exercises is given in Canvas by semester start. Compulsory attendance in the lectures.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Take-home individual written exam. Duration: 5 days.

Assessed on the basis A-F (with A as the highest level and F as fail)
