Prerequisites

MUR117 Composing and Arranging or MUK113 Composing and Arranging, or similar, as well as MUR107 Aesthetics, Philosophy of Science and Analysis or MUK107 Scientific Theory, Aesthetics and Analysis, or similar.

Course contents

The course is a precursor to the bachelor thesis, and must be passed before the bachelor thesis can be delivered.

  • Work with different compositional techniques/form

  • Melodic, harmonic and rhythmic principles

  • Analysis of existing and own compositions

  • Score studies

  • Work with theoretical and practical arranging for various instruments and instrument compositions

  • Understand the form of disposal, melodic/rhythmic design, articulation, phrasing, notation practice etc.

  • Composing for film and television

  • Proposal for bachelor thesis

Learning outcomes

The student will:

  • be able to apply academic knowledge and practical skills related to compositional elements and principles

  • organize in relation to stylistic role models

  • able to work independently with music and music arrangement composed and arranged for various orchestral compositions

Examination requirements

- Approved attendance for the teaching
- Passed compulsory assignments. the number of compulsory assignments is presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.
- Approved written project description of the forthcoming Bachelor thesis.

Teaching methods

Training is conducted as a combination of group lessons and individual guidance related to work tasks.

Expected scope of work for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

  • An individual project with a submission of the scores and audio product. Counts as 60% of the final grade.

  • A written proposal to the forthcoming bachelor thesis. Counts as 40% of the final grade.
